Well formatted edition

This edition has a hyperlinked table of contents to the beginning of each chapter. The beginning of each chapter also has a set of hyperlinks to sections within the chapter. Even the footnotes are hyperlinked. The layout of the text is very nice; even the Greek characters look good.

This is truely a great book on the history of the early church! The early church is unlike the church of today we must get back to the true ways of Jesus and the Apostles for this is the Way of the early church.

A piece of history

I love Schaff. His History of the Creeds is a powerful theological primer, and his encyclopedic Church Fathers sets are essential to any serious Christian library. That said, I found his history to be... well... historical. Schaff wrote from the perspective of late 19th century Western Protestant optimism, with the "Church militant and triumphant" (he actually uses this phrase) on the path to bringing light to the undeveloped world.

He's an excellent writer with a lovely range of expression, but WHAT he is trying to express has since been proven wrong by two world wars and an evaporating Western spirituality.

Schaff, then, is someone to read on two levels. He says much about Church history until the Reformation. He says MORE about Western Protestant attitudes in the late 19th century.

The Kindle formatting is flawless. The writing is dated. But if you KNOW it is dated going into it, it can be an enjoyable read.

One would do better with Pelikan's Christian Tradition sets, of course. But Schaff's sense of narrative is often akin to Shelby Foote's Civil War series.

Okay...not great!

I was not really sure how to rate this book. I have read another book by Mr. Green that I loved. His novel Exact Revenge was his Count of Monte Cristo story, which is a favorite of mine, so I went into it with already knowing I was going to like it. But his books get such mixed reviews, I wasn't sure if I would read any others. So, with that said, I read great reviews for the sequel to Letter of the Law, so I decided to try it, knowing I had to read this one first. It was okay....not great. I didn't hate the characters like so many other reviewers did, at least the main character was honest with herself about her flaws. And I loved the character of the vicim's father. Don't know if we will see him again or not. But anyway, the story was good, even if it seemed not very plausible,and it kept me reading so I could see what happened. Not great, just okay.

This is the fourth title of Mr. Green's that I have read. I'm not a huge sports fan, but I really enjoy his books. This time around, no sports, and a female main character! A departure that wasn't too heavy or too light... I think it was just right.

Fascinating material made difficult to read because it's poorly put together - repetitive and disjointed. A good editor could do something with this material to produce a fabulous biography.

I bought the book because the Strachey families are related to my partner's late wife's family, so it helps with family tree information. (They were a bit of a" wierd" mob! The cover photo of them posing in 'prayerful look is funny because they were all agnostic.

Safe new author - book a Refreshing Treat

If you are looking for a new author, meet Ms. Childs. Her book, "Death by Darjeeling" is a refreshing new treat.
I am continually looking for new, interesting story tellers. Ms. Childs is well on her way to becoming a good mystery writer although I did not give the book a full five stars. I held one star back for this first book in the series only because the book has a slightly amateurish feel to it, just like the main character, Ms. Theodosia Browning, who is an amateur sleuth. This book is a good introduction into adult mystery stories for young women--it is very adult without being smutty or dirty. It gets 5 stars for being "clean."
If you love to sit with a tea cup in your hand while reading, this book is definitely for you.
I look forward to reading "Gunpowder Green" another of Ms. Child's books as soon as I can to see if both the Ms. Browning and Ms. Childs' writing has matured.
Short-short synopsis: Theodosia owns a tea shop, caters an event where a guest dies from drinking the tea, and snoops to find the murderer. There are clues, which I missed, and when the person who committed the murder was revealed, I thought Ms. Childs made a very clever choice of the characters.
Things about the book I liked:
I loved the cover design. (5 stars for the cover)
I loved the name of the dog, Earl Grey. (5 stars for the dog!)
I loved the descriptions of Charlestown.
I loved the tea-room, its sights, and its smells. (5 stars here)
I loved the descriptions of various types of teas. I am not an adventurous tea-drinker, but after reading "Death by Darjeeling," I plan to try various flavors now. (10 stars here)
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to Ms. Childs' writing career.

An Enjoyable Book

Theodosia Browning is the owner of a teashop in Charleston's historic district. When developer Hughes Barron is found poisoned with a cup of her tea in his hand, she's upset. But when a friend becomes the prime suspect, Theo starts to investigate to find the real killer. The late Mr. Barron was not a scrupulous man, so there is no shortage of suspects. Even his partner had motive. But can she find the killer before he comes after her?
I really enjoyed this book, however, it's obviously a first novel. The writing style is a little wooden in spots, and the first chapter bogs down a little giving backgrounds of the series characters. On the other hand, I was drawn in by the characters and really came to care for them. The plot wasn't quite developed as well as it could have been, but it progressed well, was logical, and there were plenty of good red herrings to keep me guessing. The setting was intriguing; I'd love to visit the area after reading this book. And the tea aspect was just right. I'm not a tea person, but the information was interesting enough without overshadowing the mystery.
Overall, the flaws were minor, and I really did enjoy this book. The author shows a lot of promise, and I look forward to watching her talent develop as the series progresses.

Childs brews up a charming cuppa!

Theodosia Browning, proprietress of the Indigo Tea Shop of Charleston, goes a sleuthing when one of her staff is implicated in the death of sleazy real estate developer, Hughes Barron, at a society function catered by Theodosia. She feels impelled to clear her friend and save her own reputation and business. Delightful characters with wonderful names abound. The ambiance of Charleston is wonderfully captured.
A charming summer read that can be enjoyed by the young and old alike without insulting anyone's sensibilities. I found myself wanting to grab a scone and cuppa. The tea lore and recipe were a intriguing addition. Looking forward to the next book in the series. Highly recommend to ladies of the RED HAT SOCIETY.

Sue Grafton doesn't let you down.

"I" is also for impressive, interesting and intriguing.
Sue Grafton's ninth book in the Kinsey Millhone series is all these and more.
In this installment, Kinsey is asked to take over the investigation of the five-year-old Isabelle Barney murder.
David Barney, Isabelle's second husband, was tried and acquitted of her murder. Now he's being sued for wrongful death, and it is Kinsey's job to find evidence that implicates David in the murder.
That turns out to be easier said than done. Kinsey finds out that there are a lot more people who would have liked Isabelle dead than just David. Her employer, her ex-husband, her ex-husband's wife, her best friend and even her sister all held grudges against Isabelle.
Kinsey clearly has her hands full with this one. Everyone is a suspect. Slowly but surely, she puts all the clues together and finds the killer.
This novel is almost identical in style to the other Kinsey Millhone books and that is what makes it so good. Grafton is smart enough to find a formula that works and stay with it. It's a basic mystery story with enough twists, turns and characters to keep it interesting.
The characters in this novel are part perfection and part hindrance. Grafton paints them vividly -- my favorite is Curtis McIntyre, the ex-con who tries more than one to pick Kinsey up. They are more than supporting players.
But, while the characters are wonderfully created, the abundance of them may confuse some readers. I had a little trouble remembering who was married to whom and who was doing what when Isabelle was killed. I was so interested, though, that I flipped back through the pages to find out what I needed to know. Some people may not think it's worth the trouble, however, and give up.
My favorite thing about this novel is that it is almost impossible to figure out who actually did the killing before reading the last page. I guess an experienced sleuth could figure it out, but for those of us who are amateurs it's a great puzzle.
Don't let the fact that you haven't read the eight novels published before this one stop you from enjoying it. In this book, as in each of the ones before it, Kinsey gives a "25-words-or-less" narrative of her past that catches you up and teases you to go back and read the other ones.
This novel is one of those you either deliberately read slowly because you don't want to get to the end, or you read as quickly as possible so youc an go back and read the others.
Either way you do it, Sue Grafton won't let you down.

"I" is for Number One

Hands down, this is the best book of the series. That doesn't mean you can necessarily start here, just that this one is a head above the rest. Kinsey is brought into a wrongful death case shortly before trial when the previous investigator dies. She finds out that he was not really doing his job, instead hiding away in his office to sneak a pizza or two. As always there are twists and turns. All of them make sense and are told with the Kinsey's characteristic sardonic tone.
The case involves an old murder and the supporting cast, as always, is well drawn and interesting. The nice thing about the Kinsey novels is that the recurring characters, including Kinsey herself, grow and their lives change from book to book. (That's part of the reason why you really can't skip around.)
Anyway, the ending is surprising, plausible, and exciting. In fact, you'll probably say "boy the killer was smart and almost got away with it."
In short, this one is a keeper. I know it'll be worth your time.

Absorbing Light Reading That Keeps You Guessing 'Til The End

Grafton has written yet another fun mystery of the Kinsey Millhone variety. After being acquitted of the murder of his wealthy and artistic wife, an architect is sued in civil court for wrongful death by the victim's obsessed first husband, and Kinsey is hired to solidify the evidence against him (remind you of OJ?). I was particularly impressed with the skillful way Grafton wove the development of the murder victim's character through interviews with those who knew her. This is definitely one of the better of the alphabet mysteries. I naughtily stayed up way past my bedtime to finish this one.
