Good advice from one of the legends of combat shooting

Bill Jordan was a Border Patrolman beginning in the days of Prohibition and over the years became a legend. Tall and lean, but with a ready smile and a good handshake, Jordan was one of the fastest men with a handgun in history: from a neutral posture, he could draw, fire and hit his target in .27 second. In a courtroom, as a witness for a friend of his, Jordan pulled one of the most incredible feats ever officially witnessed: with a court officer pointing a gun at him, Jordan drew and "fired" his unloaded gun before the deputy could pull the trigger of his weapon. For exhibitions, Jordan would line up six aspirin tablets, drop back six feet and hit all six from the hip.

More than just a top-flight pistolero, Jordan had a big impact on combat handguns. Jordan was one of the driving forces behind the development of the Smith & Wesson Model 19 Combat Magnum, a medium-frame revolver chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge. He later championed the development of the .41 Magnum cartridge and the Smith & Wesson revolver chambered for it. He also developed the Jordan Holster, one of the fastest combat holsters ever made. I carried various Colt and Smith & Wesson revolvers, including a Model 19, in a Don Hume Jordan rig for several years and it was one of the fastest and most comfortable setups I ever wore.

I was privileged to meet Bill Jordan a few times after he retired from the Border Patrol and was working as a field representative for the National Rifle Association; he was even kind enough to give me some tips on my own shooting stance that were of great help to me.

This book was written in the days when revolvers were the norm for almost all law enforcement officers but, contrary to some of the other reviews posted here, the techniques are just as valid for today's double-action pistols. Jordan's suggestions for carrying concealed are especially worthwhile. To this day, I keep a few rounds of ammunition in a jacket pocket when I go armed.

This book is not for everyone: while there are some great anecdotes, the focus of "No Second Place Winner" is surviving a gunfight, especially the all-to-common encounter when fractions of a second can make all the difference in the world. The reader needs to understand that Bill Jordan's knowledge came from real-life experience. In addition, there are portions of the book that might offend some modern sensibilities and Bill Jordan never worried much about being politically correct.

There are plenty of books about combat handgun techniques and no book is a substitute for training and regular practice, but "No Second Place Winner" deserves to be on the shelf of anyone interested in the art and especially those whose lives might depend on it.

Gen Xer loves the old school

I love this book because i am a revolver aficianado (probably rare for a 27 year old today) with a CCW who has an affinity for the "men's guns". ie- no nonsense, get the job done workhorses. This description aptly fits Jordan's writing style as well. I like it and wish all instructional books were this well written. He even interjects exciting and humorous anecdotes (although not quite "PC") about his career as a lawman with the Border Patrol and otherwise. This is a forum from a Type-A who has been there and done that in an *** kicking manner, and is a good read for any sports enthusiast needing the perspective of a never-say-die fighter. One quote stands out clearly, and that is, "with enough determination you can win even when you appear to be losing--just keep shooting!" I could not have said it better! Enjoy this book if you can find it--- I special ordered my copy at Batnes & Noble.

Elf ranger Drizzt Do'Urden and his gifted warriors go in search of a missing member of their own band in this latest fast-moving fantasy adventure from bestseller Salvatore (Servant of the Shard, etc.). In the previous episode of the Paths of Darkness series (of the Forgotten Realms umbrella series), Wulfgar the barbarian fought a demon, was possessed and supposedly killed. Now it turns out that not only is he alive but he is in need of the type of assistance at which his friends excel. Getting to Wulfgar and aiding him in his quest for Aegis-fang, his warhammer, is only part of the fun. Drizzt Do'Urden, along with Cattie-Brie, a dwarf named Bruenor Battlehammer and Regis the Halfling, often have to battle the obligatory orcs, goblins and ogres on their way to the real business at hand. A second plot involves the stalking of Drizzt Do'Urden by Le'Lorinel, a Moon elf (or pale elf, whereas Drizzt is a Drow or dark elf). The author combines some of the good versus evil of Robin Hood and his merry men, the campy heroics and friendship of The Princess Bride (including an appearance of dread pirate Sheila Kree) and a rather unfulfilled stab at race relations with Le'Lorinel's unhinged hatred for Drizzt Do'Urden. As this is the fourth novel in the subseries of a larger series, it is not for the uninitiated. Long-awaited by Salvatore's legions of fans, however, this book is as certain as its predecessors to climb bestseller charts. 10-city author tour.

Good read, Not Salvatore's Best

Salvatore brings back everyone's favorite Dark Elf for another installment of the Paths of Darkness series. The book itself was a fast read, as are most of Salvatore's works, but it left me wanting a bit.
To his credit, the author resolved and wrapped up many hanging treads left throughout the series.
The characterization of the pirates was wonderful, but the opponent Salvatore lined up for Drizzt came of as a shadow of Entrari. I felt that he could have completely left this character out or developed someone within the pirate crew to cover the need for a dramatic closing fight (Salvatore's greatest strength).
If Salvatore continues to write books with the Heroes of Mithiril Hall (which I pray he does), I look forward to seeing who or what he comes up with to challenge the party.
Bottom Line: A good book, and worth the wait. Even Salvatore's B work is better than 90% of the rambling epics on the fantasy market.

Drizzt Lite

First off, let me say that I enjoyed reading this book a lot. I read it cover-to-cover yesterday and do not consider it to have been a day wasted. I read fantasy books because they are light fare, an easy break from the day-to-day stresses of the working world, and I read Salvatore's fantasy because it is exciting and well written. From that perspective, this book was absolutely terrific: a return of fantasy's most consistently exciting character without the "end of the world" motif that is such a common and overwhelming theme in the genre. It is very solid Drizzt fare.
Having said that, this book is not as good as the Crystal Shard. Shard contained a level of suspense and moral ambiguity that is missing here. The problem is common enough in any Wizards of the Coast setting (and can indeed be found in some of their computer games as well): as the characters advance in level and/or power, nothing in the story can really injure or threaten them. The protagonist becomes superhero - far outstripping his foes in both physical and mental prowess. This is problematic in a linear plot. Servant of the Shard was SO GOOD because it avoided this issue by presenting a vast set of interweaving difficulties and complex situations. In other words, the story could have logically ended in any number of different ways. Sea of Swords misses that critical element that Salvatore always has in his books that contain Jarlaxle: complexity.
I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to Drizzt fans. It advances the characters emotionally, contains solid sarcastic wit in several places, and it is action-packed without having the action overwhelm. However, I also eagerly await the return of Entreri and Jarlaxe.

Hmmmm...

In reading this book, it looks like we're beginning to have a problem here. While it is apparent that Salvatore loves his characters, I got the distinct impression while reading this book that he would have rather been writing something else. Salvatore is falling into the category of the famous writer that has been typecast and is desparately wanting to do something different, but people are simply waving too much money under his nose to write more Drizzt novels. Sea of Swords is a book filled with over-dramatization, repeated phrases from his other books, and way too many adjectives. But that's not the problem. The problem is that Salvatore is better than this; he *knows* better than that. It's like before he wrote the book, he sat down and said "Well, a bunch of teenagers are going to read this, the not civilized adults who read my Demonwars novels, so I'd better write to the audience." Oh boy. The slow demise of Drizzt may have just begun. My advice to Mr. Salvatore: You were an excellent writer, and you still are. Follow your passion. If you want to dump Drizzt, then dump him. If you still want to make a lot of money writing TSR novels, fine. Write about Jarlaxle and Entreri. Use the second half of "Servant of the Shard" as a guide. You'll have fun, it'll be a *great* book instead of a *barely good* book like this one, people will buy it (I know I will), and you'll still make money. I would much, much rather read about Jarlaxle and Entreri than about a drow hero who is getting tired of himself, and whose very author is getting tired of him.

Sounds like family

I've just finished As I Lay Dying today and it was a pretty good book, not perfect but worth the time and effort. I've read some of the other reviewer's comments about how tough it is to understand the dialect, but it wasn't tough for me because I had grandparents who actually spoke how Faulkner wrote it. That obstacle was overcome. The story had to be pieced together to form the whole and it was way more fluid than say, Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury. The characters were tragic country folk whose trials and tribulations were predictable with a father like Anse.

I'm not going to give the story away, but I will say that if you get confused to re-read because the book is not that big and quick to read once you get rolling. This was my second book by Faulkner that I have read. The previously mentioned The Sound and the Fury was much tougher and made As I Lay Dying much easier. Start here if you decide to read Faulkner; you will know soon if you want to read anymore of his works.

Masterfully written but not the type of story I enjoy

An author had this to say on point of view: “Always add a POV like it costs you a million dollars.” While I think this is a good rule of thumb to keep narrative in check and give enough depth to leading characters, I also see that it’s a matter of preference. Many authors I greatly admire write multiple points of view in very complex narratives, weaving the voices together in unexpected ways. It becomes like a puzzle that I have to solve, something I really enjoy. Books like Frank Herbert’s Dune and the works of Patricia A. McKillip come to mind. And really, it would be a sad world without The Martian Chronicles.

William Faulkner does a masterful job of writing this novel about a dying woman from the points of view of multiple characters. Each character has insight into the narrative and each is also grounded in his or her immediate reality, such as Cash’s list on building the coffin and Dewey Dells’ worries about her pregnancy. When mother Addie’s voice shows up for the first time, it is a startling moment but a welcome break from the family members, who are at this point focused on their own misery.

I wonder if perhaps there were too many points of view; I did get confused when names outside the family occasionally popped up and disappeared after the one chapter. The voices of neighbors offered oblique insight into the family, but the people the Bundren family meet along their journey don’t offer much except for judgment. I greatly admire Faulkner’s ability to change the syntax and diction with his characters. This reflects their personalities and ages. Cora for example speaks more lucidly and clearly than the younger sister, Dewey Dell, who does a fair amount of rambling to get her point across while still skirting the big issues. Vardaman’s voice is particularly believable as a young boy, though I honestly thought he was much younger than some sources online would indicate. I saw him as a five or six-year-old boy, and some people think he’s around ten. His bizarre logic (correlating his mother’s death with a fish), albeit brought about by his grief, seems like something a very young child would think up.

Faulkner writes wonderfully about ordinary people in ordinary settings. His focus on the mundane household chores (i.e. cleaning the fish) gives me a solid foundation for the world his characters inhabit. His characters express themselves primarily through interior monologues but the setting details are tactile and real. I especially admired Faulkner’s careful plotting in the novel. He started in the midst of the plot instead of dwelling on exposition. Setting details were fed to us along the way. The family’s backstory similarly came through in the characters’ actions and thoughts, not in long blocks of exposition.

Hilarious, delightful

Charles Dickens wrote The Pickwick Papers in his early 20s, but the writing is first rate and as witty as any seasoned author could have done in his place! Like many of Dickens's works, Pickwick was published in monthly installments, or "numbers" as they were called then. Although Dickens originally intended to end the story at the twentieth number, the popularity of the series (and the resultant income) convinced Dickens to double the length to forty numbers. The end result is a large offering that'll take you a while to get through (~750 pages in the excellent Penguin edition, which I read).
Despite its length, Pickwick never tries your patience. It's delightfully humorous from beginning to end. Samuel Pickwick is the bumbling, middle-aged, wealthy namesake of this novel. He's the leader of a small group of single men that gets into all sorts of mischief, both physical and social. Booze is rampant. Apparently liquor back then was much more a part of daily life than today; everywhere these guys go they party and get drunk. They get into trouble with the law, women, unsavory characters, and more.
Characterization is superb. This is one of the few novels I've read for which I can actually say that I got to know the characters. In most books I've read, the characters remain two-dimensional and the plot is what carries the story. In Pickwick, the *characters* are the essence of the story and the novel wouldn't be memorable at all if a lesser author were attempting to breathe life into these people.
The Penguin edition includes a decent collection of endnotes to help explain unfamiliar portions of the text. Nevertheless, there were still quite a few words and concepts peculiar to early 19th century England that I didn't grasp. This edition also has maps of southern England and a key to the specific locations that the Pickwickians visit. In addition, two appendices reprint some of the announcements and prefaces that Dickens wrote in relation to the work.
Highly recommended, particularly if you enjoy classic literature! Dickens's later works overshadow this gem due to their maturity, but Pickwick beats them all in enthusiasm, humor, and wit.

Pure and shining brilliance

I have absolutely no doubts whatsoever that Charles Dickens, if he lived today, would still classify as an author's author. He's a master of all the things that make for great writing and storytelling. Dickens has an ear for dialogue most authors would kill their own mothers to possess. He also is a master of creating vivid scenery, another sign of excellence essential to great writing and one which many authors lack. Finally, but not least in importance, Dickens knows character development. He REALLY knows how to develop intriguing characters, to the point where many of his books spawned figures that have become literary archetypes. Not bad for a guy who grew up in extremely adverse circumstances. He even spent some time in a factory sticking labels on bottles after his father's imprisonment for debt. Most people wouldn't recover from such poverty, but Dickens did. He went on to a successful career in journalism before settling down as an author of serial novels. This format, which allowed Dickens to write and release his stories piecemeal, made him a great success with the public. The anticipation for the latest chapter or two of his stories often led to near riots. Not many writers can duplicate this feat today.

"The Pickwick Papers" is one of Dickens's earliest works, written when the author was a mere twenty-four years old. You wouldn't know his age by reading the story, though. "Pickwick" is a work that delivers healthy doses of sophisticated humor, keen observations on pressing social issues, romance, and a mature knowledge of human behavior. It's of course fiction, although Dickens presents the story as a true series of events documented by the "Pickwick Club," a social organization founded by retired businessman and all around merry fellow Samuel Pickwick. In the 1820s, Pickwick and several friends embark on a series of journeys through Southern England, a journey that lasts for roughly two years. Ostensibly, the businessman and his fellows take the trips to learn more about their country. Instead, their travels turn into a series of often hilarious events mixed with a few serious scrapes. Pickwick must constantly save individuals from the machinations of one Alfred Jingle, an itinerant scalawag with a penchant for wooing women for their money. In between these adventures, our hero must contend with a lawsuit filed by a former female employee who thought he wanted to marry her, save his friends from numerous imbroglios involving members of the opposite sex, survive a stay in a debtor's prison, and live through a couple hundred other adventures both major and minor.

If I had to list one overarching theme I enjoyed most about "The Pickwick Papers," it's got to be the humor. This book is one of the funniest things I've read in ages. We're talking laugh out loud and laughing later when remembering scenes from the book funny. Much of the humor centers on Pickwick's manservant Sam Weller, a guy prone to uttering some of the most hilarious sayings you'll likely see in any book. Weller's father is even more amusing, and when father and son sit down to write a letter to a lovely young woman who's caught Sam's eye, well, prepare to hold your sides. Also worth a belly laugh or two is the chapter where Pickwick and his friends visit the town of Eatanswill in time to witness the results of a contentious local election. Dickens's observations about party politics and media manipulation are not only highly amusing, but also relevant to our own age. And who can forget the courtroom scenes where the lawyer makes Pickwick, this kindly old gentleman who wouldn't hurt a fly, look like an absolute monster? I could go on and on. If you read this book without cracking up, check your pulse because you're probably dead.

Another element of the book I enjoyed concerns Dickens's ability to write scenes that simply overflow with the joy of living. A lengthy chapter describing Pickwick's stay with some country friends over Christmas serves as an excellent example. The sheer bliss of this part of the book is infectious, as Dickens makes us marvel at the simple delight of spending a few days in the company of good friends, good food, and good entertainment. On the other hand, the author isn't above indulging in an activity he's become famous for, namely showing the reader the depths of human suffering. There is far less misery in "The Pickwick Papers" than there is in "Oliver Twist," to cite one example, but it's still here. The debtor's prison in which Pickwick stays for a time provides the author with a perfect forum for attacking England's tradition of imprisoning those unfortunate souls who cannot pay their creditors. I marvel at how Dickens can balance these two extremes in the space of a single novel. In this way, "The Pickwick Papers" manages to encompass life in both its good and bad aspects.

I read the Penguin Classics edition of "The Pickwick Papers," and I'm glad I did. The supplementary material is copious and helpful more often than not. I didn't care much for the introduction from Robert L. Patten, however, which I thought tried to read too much into the story. I did appreciate the footnotes that help explain the English geography, slang, and popular culture references found throughout the story. Further material provides information on the three illustrators who worked on the story, biographical details of Dickens's life, and even maps tracing Pickwick's myriad travels through the English countryside. Reading "The Pickwick Papers" makes me realize that I've neglected this author's works for far too long. I can't praise this book enough; it's that entertaining and that good. Give it a go as soon as possible!

Arrogant to proclaim, but this is truly perfect, pure

...reading delight. Whenever I get depressed or feel like I can't start another book, I re-read some passages of this book written by Charles Dickens. It is one of the best books written in English. Intentionally syrupy and over-sweet, Dickens writes so perfectly as to make the reader wonder how anyone could ever write so gorgeously. If you pass this one up, you're cheating yourself. I couldn't put the book down. It's a rare and special novel that keeps me in bed over the weekend reading from dawn to sleep.
