Sci-Fi Classic

The First Men in the Moon It's great to see that one of H.G.'s enduring classics is now handily produced for your Kindle or iPhone. It is a "must read" for all fans of classic sci-fi. It's a quick read so it makes a good travel book. If you haven't read it before, it will seem outdated (or even a little cheesy in some places) by today's standards. However, it is an excellent starter story for younger readers, whereas "War of the Worlds" might be a little scary. A great addition to my "free" collection.

A Memorable Adventure with Surprising Underpinnings

Born in Victorian England, H.G. Wells had very strong ideas about the advantages and disadvantages of a society built on fixed social classes and endless imperialism--and these ideas would inform virtually everything he wrote over his long and distinguished career. Even in the handful of science fiction novels for which he is chiefly recalled today, Wells would return to these issues again, combining them with then-emerging scientific concepts to remarkably provocative effect.

In some respects THE FIRST MEN ON THE MOON is likely his most accessible novel to modern readers, for it is lighter in tone than such Wells novels as THE TIME MACHINE and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, and it reads like an exceptionally well-written pulp adventure of the era. But the underpinnings are the same: class, conquest, and--as in THE WAR OF THE WORLDS--Darwin's controversial theories on natural selection and evolution.

In this novel Wells relies significantly on fantasy, presenting us with Professor Cavor, an eccentric (and quite comical) scientist determined to create a substance that is "opaque" to gravity, what we would today call an antigravity material. Cavor is interested in the work for the sake of knowledge pure and simple, but bankrupt businessman Bedford realizes the commercial implications and attaches himself to the project--and when the material is perfected the two men create a sphere that launches them to the moon!

If this is clearly the stuff of fantasy (Jules Verne sneered at it), what the two men find on the moon is not, or at least was not considered so at the time. In 1901 little was known about the moon, and many notable scientists thought it might hold life. Upon their arrival, Cavor and Bedford find an atmosphere of sorts, a host of strange plants, and ultimately an insect-like race of beings that reside inside the moon itself, beings who practice forced evolution upon their own kind in order to create a rigid, hive-like social structure.

As the nature of the "Selenite" society reflects Victorian concepts of fixed social classes taken to a logical and unpleasant extreme, so do the two humans reflect opposing points of sociopolitical view. Cavor is clearly an instrument of science, less interested in practicalities than in knowledge for its own sake--a point of view that Wells seems to hold in considerable sympathy. But for all this, Cavor is ineffectual; he must rely on Bedford's smash-and-grab imperialistic temperament to see them through. As in many Wells novels, the resulting clash of ideology is stalemate: both extremes need each other, but they are incapable of building compromise and neither is able to overcome the other to reach an outcome that will be satisfactory to any one concerned.

All of this sounds terribly dry and dusty, but the book itself isn't. THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON is a remarkably lively novel, a fast-paced quick read that will appeal greatly to most readers as it balances its philosphical questions with great chunks of pulse-pounding adventure. And even though we know that Wells was off the mark re lunar atmosphere, flora, and fauna, it is easy to suspend our disbelief to enjoy the ride. Recommended.

Maybe my favorite sci-fi book of all

What always gets me with Wells is the forcefulness of his imagination -- his ability to construct powerful, symbolically resonant setpieces based upon the scientific ideas of his time. In the final pages of "The Time Machine" he gave us one of the great apocalyptic visions in all of literature. In "The First Men in the Moon," he gives us a magnificently alien setting, full of bizarre moments -- jumping about the lunar surface in 1/6 G; the Giddy Bridge and the Fight in the Cave of the Moon-Butchers; the bizarre lunar ecology, in which all the plants die every night and are reborn each dawn.
Scientifically, much of this stuff doesn't hold up after a hundred years. And the device he comes up with to get his characters to the moon -- Cavorite -- is without basis, an arbitrary magical tool not unlike the time machine. Even when Wells' science is iffy, though, he presents it in such a clear, convincing fashion that you are only too glad to suspend disbelief while the story unfolds.
In the Selenites we have a metaphor for a different type of society -- rigidly hierarchical, with the needs of the individual sublimated to the whole. The metaphor obviously comes from social insects; though it became a sci-fi cliche, it was still fresh circa 1901. In the remarkable last section of the book (Cavor's communications from the moon), Wells describes the Selenite society with delightful attention to detail. He ends with a haunting, unforgettable image, and probably the best closing sentence of any sci-fi novel.

Parallels are not equivalents.

There are many solid books on connections and continuity in history and religion and physics. However Jacob Bronowski, "The Ascent of Man", would turn me over in my grave if he found out that I was reading such books as this. There are too many quasi science quasi religion books that want to take some principle and reinterpret it to be a New age truth or prove the some old blind philosopher beat us too it for example (The Seat of the Soul.)

Dr. Capra is drawing parallels in two fields and not trying to say, "See I told you so". He takes the time and pages to describe the science and also does a pretty good job of distilling complex religions down to single chapters. I leave it up to Dr. Capra and you to determine if there really is any parallel. A parallel does not mean equivalents. If you are a Gary Zukav sort of person this book will not help you at all.

Lightweight, but great fun

Lexi wakes up in hospital after a car accident. She's lost all memory of the last three years and is amazed at how her life has changed: suddenly she's married to a gorgeous guy, she's running her department at work and on paper her life suddenly seems perfect. But slowly she starts to realize that things are not quite as wonderful as they initially appeared to be. For starters, her best friends seem to have distanced themselves from her. And her husband Eric doesn't really seem to be her type.

This is a fast and fun book to read. The premise hooks you in and some parts are laugh out loud funny (particularly when Lexi realizes why her husband keeps making the Mt Blanc references). Okay, so it doesn't stretch your brain too much and you need to suspend your disbelief that she would have made some of the changes in her life, but overall it's still very entertaining. A perfect holiday read.

This is the third Sophie Kinsella book that I've read, and while I enjoyed it, I don't think it's as good as her others. If you like her books you'll enjoy this too, but if you're new to her as an author I think her others are better.

Good But Not Great Kinsella

There is a book by Agatha Christie titled Why Didn't They Ask Evans? My main thought as I finished this book was why didn't Lexi confide in Fi, her best friend since childhood. If she had, things would undoubtedly have been better for her. Or at least her other old friends might have understood. . .

I have to agree with Cordelia that I was disappointed in Lexi for having an affair. She seemed a much more decent type than that. I don't get any sense of characters being churchgoers at all, but surely they've heard of the commandment Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery. Falling in love with Jon is understandable, given her total incompatability with Eric. Having an affair is not.

ChicBookFiend made a good point when she said that this book is similar to 13 Going on 30. Both heroines have discovered that they have become beautiful and successful, but they seem to have turned into bitches and try to learn how it happened. I think it's nicely done in this book. And, as it turns out, the reason is a totally logical one.

This was a nice enjoyable read, and I look forward to sharing it with my friends. However, I'm looking forward to the Shopaholic movie (and I think Isla Fisher will make a great Becky, although I'd have loved to see Christian Bale as Luke) and hopefully another Shopaholic book (Shopaholic & Daughter perhaps?) soon.

Another GREAT book

The characters of Sophie Kinsella books always remind me a little of the Amelia Bedelia books I read when I was little.

This book was so fun and different that the Shopaholic books. Lexi, the main character, was a regular girl living in London, enjoying life with a new job with her best girlfriends and an awful boyfriend. The night before her dad's funeral she trips and hits her head, only to wake up 3 years later in a hospital bed with amnesia of the past three years. It seems she was actually in a bad car accident that had taken her back to that night three years ago and erased her mind of the three years of the most major changes she had ever made in her life.

Over the next few weeks Lexi has to piece together her life, her new friends and family and find out what happen to her old friends. How could everything have changed so dramatically in three years and how can she fix it? It's such a fun story because you get to piece it together with her!

The Nixon legacy - crimes, lies, bigotry, and paranoia.

This may prove a daunting read for some, as they wade through the minutiae to get at the heart of the conversations obsessively recorded by Pres. Nixon. If you have an interest in Vietnam, Watergate, Richard Nixon or American politics, however, it's worth making the effort.

There is only one word to describe many of these conversations...chilling. Nixon's arrogance and ruthlessness were astounding. What a terrible shock it must have been for men like Haige and Kissinger to learn their every word - and the President's - had been recorded for posterity.

That anyone could listen to these tapes and proclaim that Nixon was a good president is unbelievable. In these tapes, Nixon reveals himself to be not only a compulsive liar, hut a moral bankrupt, paranoid bigot. He lied about his plans for Vietnam, his tax returns, and that fifth-rate burglary known as Watergate, in other words, a felony.

Some readers have complained that these tapes don't contain a "smoking gun." Well, he destroyed two of the tapes he made after he was ordered by the authorities to turn them over. Or rather he had his secretary "accidentally" erase them. We'll never know what those tapes contained.

He did all this and Ronald Reagan made him a goodwill ambassador to China! It's terrifying.

This book is a must for any student of American History or the Cold War.

We should all be grateful to Nixon for leaving us this invaluable piece of history. His compulsive paranoia was, in this one way, a gift to us all.

Read about what Haldeman knew about and told Nixon about Mark Felt on pp 170 & 171

This is pretty interesting material for Watergate buffs. When Watergate broke the idea that a President cursed and had a private persona shocked the American people. That disappointment is part of what led to Nixon's downfall, regardless of what the Nixon haters want to keep preaching about Nixon's criminality. It has also come to light since those years that, as Nixon Claimed, Presidents before him used their power, the FBI, the IRS, and other agencies to look into and intimidate their opponents. Yes, Johnson and Kennedy did what Nixon did. They just didn't get all of it on tape. Nor did they have the press wanting the get even for Alger Hiss (who really was a Communist agent - see Venona).

For me the most fascinating part of the tapes included in this book is to go in the index and read the segments about Mark Felt, who we now know was Deep Throat for Bob Woodward. It is clear from these transcripts that Nixon and his staff knew that Felt wanted to top job at the FBI, that they didn't trust him, that they knew he leaked to the NY Times and, most amazingly, to the Washington Post. Haldeman makes it explicitly clear on 170 & 171 that he knew from inside the Washington Post that it was Felt leaking to the Post reporters. Facsinating.

Just remember, if you were taped in your private moments, you wouldn't look to the world as you do now. You might not be as dark as Nixon comes across, but then you aren't trying to wield power on a world stage either. I am not a Nixon apologist. Rather, I am taking a broader view of what we have learned since 1975 about our Presidents, the Presidency, and how they used their power while in office. The saying is true about politics and sausage making.

Interesting

I listened to the cassette tape version of this book, which is a reenactment of the tapes by professional actors. I was kind of hoping to listen to the actual tapes, but this approach turned out to be better than expected.

One thing that kind of bugged me was the continual mispronunciation of Gordon Strachan's name (pronounced "strawn" not "stra-chen"). That kind of boo boo only reminded me that these were actors and not the real people.
