Trick Malloy Mysteries 1

No Rest for the Wicked is the fist in the Trick Molloy Mysteries short story Urban Fantasy series. I apologies for how vague this review is but with the book being short and this being the first review here for the story I feel there is a lot I can't say. Breaking one of my rules for a review which is to make sure you actually say something. One of the first problems of reviewing a short story is that so much is revealed quickly to get the reader into the character. This means a lot of the incidentals of the story have a bigger impact and would be too much like spoilers to talk about them directly. Also, unlike a novel there isn't the time to build up to the character so the writer has to introduce the information you need as quickly a possible and yet at the same time not "rush it". The pace of the story is fine and I never felt I was getting left behind at any point. Still that makes it hard to talk about the book because the first chapter holds several big reveals. The first is who he works for and the situation this puts the character in. It made the whole story uncomfortable for me. There are a lot of little, unresolved, tragedies in the characters back story which isn't unusual, but again because the story is so short it causes a problem for me. It is a straight run to the end of the story and as the reader you are not given time get settled with his situation. How this all links with the issues of the few friends he still has, his enemies, and the connection to his ex-girlfriend with the problems surrounded with that all make for an unsettling mix.

The over all theme of the story is fine with magic being a well known now in this universe. Everyone who can use magic has a trigger that is required to use their magic even the hero. The trigger idea is interesting and the author gives nice examples that give you enough information that while you might not guess each characters trigger you never feel you were setup to guess wrong. That doesn't mean he doesn't set you up in other ways however. It is written solely from Trick's view and since it is a mystery you are lead through a few dead ends on understanding things at times. In a way that is good because I don't feel the want to shout at the character for being an idiot for not seeing something the writer has made obvious more for the reader than the character. Also, these are not your average spell casters as each character has magic that is centered on one idea and the scope of what they can do is limited to that idea. For example a person could be linked to fire so what they "cast" can only be what is capable with fire. This idea is often physical but doesn't have to be rather it can center around emotions as well.

Mr. Stackpole does this story well as I immediately was rooting for the hero and wanted to beat up the villains myself. Again with it being so short I felt a little cheated by the resolution. Not that it came off as being false or was handled in some Deus Ex Machina I'm the hero so it happens kind of way. The problem is that I don't exactly feel the hero won in any way, because of the whole situation it feels almost a loss rather than any resolution to his situation. It is a short story and has to end and there are multiple about the same person so to say the characters has a victory(What there is of it) shouldn't come as a surprise. Maybe I too pessimistic and came away with the wrong feeling for the ending the writer was going for. However while I enjoyed the story and say it is well written for me it isn't a series I say I can comfortably continue.

In my opinion Mr. Stackpole has a tendency to put his heroes through a bit of personal hell and while that can work in a novel because he has time to give the hero the opportunity to turn that around into a victory there just isn't the time for it in this book and it leaves me wondering how much the character will have to go through. If each book is like that then it would be a little too morbid for me to go through that with the character each time. Still that is an observation and in no way do I know this will happen. This story could have been the beginning of the characters turning his story around and each short could end up like his books and lead the character to a true final resolution that makes you happy you've taken that journey with them. I just don't know that I want to find out bad enough.

Like I said though over all it is a great story, well written, and gives you a hero you can sympathize with enough that you want to see them succeed and he doesn't come off as the chosen savior of the world which is actually nice. The one star loss is because of the situation of the character and lack of the feeling of a real start to a resolution to that personal hell he starts in. If your are not the pessimist I am you may have a better time with the story and may find in it a short story series to follow.

I enjoyed this short... just turn the brain off a bit and enjoy.... Don't think it's high-brow literature, it's not. But it is good fun.

Jimmy Boone, a former Marine and ex-con lying low and waiting out his probation by tending bar on Hollywood Boulevard, gets drawn back onto dangerous ground after he agrees to help his bouncer buddy, Robo, look into the death of a young Guatemalan immigrant found covered in infected dog bites on an MTA bus. Boone and Robo get on a trail that leads from a ghetto dope pad, where they rescue an abused and toothless fighting dog, to a secluded desert compound near Twentynine Palms, where a psychotic crime boss, Taggert, hosts bloody dog-fighting contests. Boone soon finds himself in way over his head as he comes up against Taggert's crew of degenerates. While the book contains some familiar set pieces, Lange, the author of the story collection Dead Boys, shows he has the potential to put his own distinctive mark on the mythology of Los Angeles. sharp, witty, and gripping

Written like a screenplay, only with a lot more depth, this is a gripping yarn which doesn't disappoint.

In the old Lil Abner comic strip, there was an unfortunate character who walked around all day with a black cloud overhead inviting disaster. Obviously, he was a forerunner for Jimmy Boone, who embodies the principle: if something can go wrong, it will.

While a young man, Jimmy got himself into a situation as a result of which a judge gave him a choice: enlist or serve time. After four years in the Marines, he musters out and forms a relationship with a rich girl whose father doesn't approve. They marry anyway, but she soon leaves him. Then a Marine buddy calls and asks Jimmy to join him in a new venture, acting as a bodyguard and protecting celebrities and businessmen. Everything goes well, with Jimmy becoming a partner and living well, until, of course, they don't.

After a four-year stint in jail, Jimmy is trying to do things right. He's a bartender and part-time superintendent in the building where he lives. Things are quiet, until they're not. Troubles again follow Jimmy around even when he tries to do everything correctly. [No spoilers here, these things all transpire very early in the book.]

The novel is less of a mystery than a series of misadventures and deep character descriptions. Written with a sharp edge, the book concentrates on men and women on the edge of society and the rough and violent lives they live. Recommended.

Reportorial writing much like Richard Price

This is a very closely observed story in a style very much like Richard Price's Lush Life. As with that story, the description is extremely well done and you feel like you're right there observing the action. As with Lange's short story collection, Dead Boys, the focus is on people with slightly screwed up (or worse) lives. Somehow, in the longer form of the novel with much more action it seemed much more entertaining. The procession of one similarly messed up life after another in Dead Boys got a bit annoying.

I bought this book in the mystery/thriller section of a local Borders and I suppose that's the best category for it. The plot is very well worked out and even when you can see that two plot threads will collide some pages up it doesn't wear on you to go through the interim reading to get there. But the extremely high quality of the observations and descriptions is the strength of this book as much as the plot and actiion.

Characterizations are extremely believable but there's not much humor here and like Price's Lush Life, there's no higher level payout in thematic or philosophical content. But it's a fun read and a hell of a page turner that you won't want to put down. I definitely recommend it to anyone.

Kidnapping, burgalars, injuries and puzzels. If you like mystery stories, you'll love Nancy Drew The Ringmaster's Secret. It's about three friends trying to help out a trappez girl named Lolita. Lolita was kidnapped and raised by a grumpy man named Kroon. When she found out she was kidnapped, Kroon would not let her escape. Everyone was afraid of him because of his violence. Finally Nancy and her freinds agreed to help her. She did not know at the time that she was not only putting her self in danger, but her friends too. One incident was when Nancy and George were tied up and put on a train headed toward Canada. Another one was when Nancy was stanggeled with a black rope. Kroon knew they were on to him. So he kept planning plots to get them off his track. No matter how bad it was. But Nancy drew out smarted him by contacting Lolita's real parents. Her father was dead, but her mother was still alive. Her name was Lola Flanders. Nancy also contacted the police and told them to meet her there the same time Lola Flanders would. When everyone arrived, Kroon made a run for it. Into the woods he went. Nancy ran after him on a horse named star. She would do trick riding bare back on him. That's when one of Kroon's friends threw a rock, hit her in the head and Knocked her unconscious. Anyways, as Nancy dashed through the forest, the police made a road block on the other side. To find out what happens, read the book The Ringmaster's Secret. Trust me, the ending is really well fitted. I really liked the book because mystery stories are my thing. Also, I love it when I am kept on the egde of my seat. You never know whats going to happen next. And when you get to a really suspensful part, you can't stop reading. I think the Author did a great job of writting the book. She must have really been into mystery stories too, or she wouldn't of written it. If I were to grow up and be a writer, these would be the exact kind of books I would write. Mystery stories. I don't like those other books. lLike the mushy love stuff. Or an every day life. I could'nt handle it.

About the Author

Andrew Carnegie emigrated from Scotland to the United States in 1848 at the age of 13. At age 65 he sold the Carnegie Steel Company to JP Morgan for $480 million and devoted the rest of his life to writing and philanthropy.

David Nasaw is the author of the nationally bestselling biography The Chief: The Life of William Randolph Hearst, winner of the Bancroft Prize for History, the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize, the Ambassador Book Prize for Biography, and finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. He is currently a distinguished professor of history and Director for the Humanities at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

A Series of Essays on How to Handle Wealth That's as Prevalent Today More Than Ever

Andrew Carnegie was a major steel industrialist in the late 1800s, up there with the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts. Carnegie established Carnegie Steel, which later became U.S. Steel. He retired in 1901 amassing a huge fortune, and then became a philanthropist. In doing so, he composed a series of essays on how one should handle wealth once he has acquired it, the most famous of these being "The Gospel of Wealth," the title of this books. However, other essays are included, all relating to the same topic, so they are consistent with one another.
The book would have been ideal for the people of "Occupy Wall Street," and by facebook, I tried to recommend it. I hope, if and when the movement reemerges, they will take it into consideration. I highly recommend it.
The very first thing I would like to point out is that this is NOT a Socialist doctrine, nor does it relate to that concept in any way, shape, or form. Those who feel that it is have missed the point entirely. Those of every persuasion need to read this book. One might ask that if this is not Socialist, or Communist, then what is it? What you will find by reading this may surprise you.
First of all, Carnegie warns of the rich spoiling their children, leaving them unearned wealth as inheritance, and leaving them their business simply because they are their children, but without any qualifications. The first can spoil and destroy them, not knowing what to do with their unearned wealth by basking in luxury. The second is that should he leave his children to head his established business, whatever it might be, they have a chance of destroying it by not knowing how to run it, and lacking the creativity to let it grow. The children must be educated and trained to run the business, to have an interest in it, and to want it to grow beyond what the founder, their fathers, have established. Also, children must learn the value of the dollar and earn their way up. If they are not qualified, the business, and wealth, should be left to someone else. A warning to the businessmen of today.
The main topic here, though, is to use the wealth to benefit society as a whole, and this is needed today, in times of economic crisis and debts, more than ever. This does not mean giving money to any person who has his hand out. Carnegie did not believe in handouts, or a welfare state. Everyone, he believed, must work for a living, unless severely disabled. Carnegie did recommend giving to charities that help the less fortunate. He also advised to be selective about what charities to support. The book does warn against scams, and this is especially true today as it was back then.
The way to use wealth to benefit society would be to contribute what society needs or could use to benefit the public. If a town doesn't have a library, one should donate and build one with his own money, not the government's. This could apply to community centers, public swimming pools, parks, walkways, bike paths, and today, since the government is short on cash, roads and bridges. By this, I mean that if a wealthy man owning a business or corporation lives in a small town that needs a new bridge or roadway or other form of infrastructure, perhaps he should donate and built it himself to benefit the town, rather than wait for the government to do it. This is a problem in our society today, depending to the government to supply all our needs, and this is why we are in such massive debt.
Other ways are to build hospitals, invest in research and development in new technologies, and new products that will make society as a whole even more prosperous. Education is a major investment, in college and universities, as are new academic disciplines.
Greed is no doubt prevalent in our society today, and that is a major problem. Many businessmen acquire unearned wealth at the expense of others, and hoard it away, only to acquire more. When taken into consideration, these people cannot even begin to spend the money they have, and they want more, more, more, only to let it sit on its ass. This is a big problem in this country and this explains our crisis. In other countries, many take the money and reinvest it. That is what we need to do if we are to get this country moving again. In spite of the debt, the U.S. has a lot of money, just sitting there in a vault doing nothing. Should all that money be reinvested in new industries, new technology, education, new products, this country as a whole would rise again as a major world power. This would also produce even more wealth. We are declining right now, but we have the money to pull us out if we use it wisely.
This book, these essays were written in the early twentieth century, around 1910, but the book, and its meaning, is timeless. This is a book that should be in every business office, big and small, from Wall Street to Main Street. This book is truly a "Gospel of Wealth" for it warns of the dangers of wealth if use foolishly, but also extolls the benefits if used wisely.
Andrew Carnegie's most famous contribution of his donations is the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City. He has also donated libraries to towns across the U.S., and pipe organs to churches all over the world, at their own request after hearing to one he donated in Scotland, when he retired. He also left an inheritance for his children to live out the rest of their lives comfortably, but stopped there. His grandchildren had to start over again, much to their benefit.
This is a short book consisting of seven essays, but they all go together, as a few more essays from other compilations Carnegie has written. His works should be revived for all to read, for these are classics well worth reading, and remembering.
