The writings of Hippolytus, Cyprian, Caius, and Novatian

The works of Hippolytus make up almost 40% of the volume. He is considered the first true Roman Christian Father, though he is ethically a Greek. He was a disciple of Irenaeus. His works are mainly from the early 3rd century. His main work is a ‘Refutation of all Heresies’ and is a review of many of the early Christian heretics and their beliefs. The rest of his works are mainly Biblical commentaries. I found his writings interesting.

The next section contains the writings of Cyprian and they take up about 50% of the volume. He was the bishop of Carthage and was influential in the mid 3rd century. He was a disciple of Tertullian. Most of his writings are related to the controversy over the ‘lapsed’, those that had fallen away from the church during some earlier persecutions. If found his writings historically interesting, but they were clearly about an issue most modern people would not relate to.

The writings of Caius were very short and covered various subjects.

The remainder of the book was the writings of Novatian. He lived during the 3rd century. He was also involved in the controversy on the lapsed. Included is a significant treatise on the Trinity and another about the consumption of meats.

Overall, these writings would mainly be of interest to scholars interested in early Christian history, but there are a few jewels included in the writings that I enjoyed. As with other volumes in this work, you see an evolution of belief in certain doctrines and can find support for almost any Christian doctrine that you want.

It is still largely residential and well-known for its small, authentic Italian restaurants and for the first Italian cafe, Caffe Vittoria

The construction of the elevated Central Artery (I-93) in the 1950s divided the North End from the rest of Boston. With the completion of the “Big Dig,” the old elevated highway has been completely removed and the North End has re-joined the rest of the city.

Well formatted edition

This edition has a hyperlinked table of contents to the beginning of each chapter. The beginning of each chapter also has a set of hyperlinks to sections within the chapter. Even the footnotes are hyperlinked. The layout of the text is very nice; even the Greek characters look good.
