Parallels are not equivalents.

There are many solid books on connections and continuity in history and religion and physics. However Jacob Bronowski, "The Ascent of Man", would turn me over in my grave if he found out that I was reading such books as this. There are too many quasi science quasi religion books that want to take some principle and reinterpret it to be a New age truth or prove the some old blind philosopher beat us too it for example (The Seat of the Soul.)

Dr. Capra is drawing parallels in two fields and not trying to say, "See I told you so". He takes the time and pages to describe the science and also does a pretty good job of distilling complex religions down to single chapters. I leave it up to Dr. Capra and you to determine if there really is any parallel. A parallel does not mean equivalents. If you are a Gary Zukav sort of person this book will not help you at all.

Lightweight, but great fun

Lexi wakes up in hospital after a car accident. She's lost all memory of the last three years and is amazed at how her life has changed: suddenly she's married to a gorgeous guy, she's running her department at work and on paper her life suddenly seems perfect. But slowly she starts to realize that things are not quite as wonderful as they initially appeared to be. For starters, her best friends seem to have distanced themselves from her. And her husband Eric doesn't really seem to be her type.

This is a fast and fun book to read. The premise hooks you in and some parts are laugh out loud funny (particularly when Lexi realizes why her husband keeps making the Mt Blanc references). Okay, so it doesn't stretch your brain too much and you need to suspend your disbelief that she would have made some of the changes in her life, but overall it's still very entertaining. A perfect holiday read.

This is the third Sophie Kinsella book that I've read, and while I enjoyed it, I don't think it's as good as her others. If you like her books you'll enjoy this too, but if you're new to her as an author I think her others are better.

Good But Not Great Kinsella

There is a book by Agatha Christie titled Why Didn't They Ask Evans? My main thought as I finished this book was why didn't Lexi confide in Fi, her best friend since childhood. If she had, things would undoubtedly have been better for her. Or at least her other old friends might have understood. . .

I have to agree with Cordelia that I was disappointed in Lexi for having an affair. She seemed a much more decent type than that. I don't get any sense of characters being churchgoers at all, but surely they've heard of the commandment Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery. Falling in love with Jon is understandable, given her total incompatability with Eric. Having an affair is not.

ChicBookFiend made a good point when she said that this book is similar to 13 Going on 30. Both heroines have discovered that they have become beautiful and successful, but they seem to have turned into bitches and try to learn how it happened. I think it's nicely done in this book. And, as it turns out, the reason is a totally logical one.

This was a nice enjoyable read, and I look forward to sharing it with my friends. However, I'm looking forward to the Shopaholic movie (and I think Isla Fisher will make a great Becky, although I'd have loved to see Christian Bale as Luke) and hopefully another Shopaholic book (Shopaholic & Daughter perhaps?) soon.

Another GREAT book

The characters of Sophie Kinsella books always remind me a little of the Amelia Bedelia books I read when I was little.

This book was so fun and different that the Shopaholic books. Lexi, the main character, was a regular girl living in London, enjoying life with a new job with her best girlfriends and an awful boyfriend. The night before her dad's funeral she trips and hits her head, only to wake up 3 years later in a hospital bed with amnesia of the past three years. It seems she was actually in a bad car accident that had taken her back to that night three years ago and erased her mind of the three years of the most major changes she had ever made in her life.

Over the next few weeks Lexi has to piece together her life, her new friends and family and find out what happen to her old friends. How could everything have changed so dramatically in three years and how can she fix it? It's such a fun story because you get to piece it together with her!
