Works of many writers from the late 3rd and early 4th century Alexandrian School

The works of Gregory Thaumaturgus make up about 13% of the volume. He is a saint in both the Catholic and Orthodox traditions. He was a disciple of Origen. His works are mainly from the mid 3rd century. He is best known for his 'Panegyric Addressed to Origen' as well as several other works. There is also a short 'Declaration of Faith', and a longer 'Metaphrase of the Book of Ecclesiastes' and a 'Canonical Epistle'. This was an interesting snapshot of 3rd century writing.

The next section contains the writings of Dionysius and they take up about 9% of the volume. He was the bishop of Alexandria in the mid 3rd century and was also a disciple of Origen. Most of his works are fragments of larger works that are no longer extant. Many of them are administrative and some address doctrines directly such as the teaching of Sabellius and his rejection of the eternity of matter.

The writings of Julius Africanus were very short and covered various subjects. He lived in the early 3rd century and was with the Alexandrian school.

Next is a section on Anatolius and several other minor writers. These are a bunch of short fragments from several minor writers from the 3rd and 4th centuries. There were some interesting bits in here, but as with most of these writings, many that were of very little interest to me.

Archelaus, bishop of Caschar, is the next author who takes up 13% of the book. He is a 3rd century bishop known for his disputation of the Manichaeans heresy, which these writings cover. It is a good introduction to the fight against this heresy.

Next is Alexander of Lycoplis, a 4th century bishop, who also wrote against the Manichaeans heresy in a relatively short work.

Methodius' writings take of 17% of this book. He was bishop of Olympus in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. He was a martyr and was best know for his writings against Origen. His writings cover many subjects including chastity, free-will, the resurrection, and many fragments on other subjects.

The remainder of the book was the writings of Arnobius, an early 4th century apologist, which take up 30% of the book. The main works are seven books 'Against the Heathen's'. It was interesting to see how he made fun of the heathen Gods, manner of worship, and superstitions. The style is not much different than what we see today of people making fun of religion.

Overall, these writings would mainly be of interest to scholars interested in early Christian history, but there are a few jewels included in the writings that I enjoyed. As with other volumes in this work, you see an evolution of belief in certain doctrines and can find support for almost any Christian doctrine that you want.

Kate's hostess, chronically grieving widow Bernie, draws the young Seattleite into a gossipy ring of lace makers. Kate, a former fashion designer, takes to them perfectly (one of several head-scratching coincidences), inspiring them to take on an empowering but controversial project. Although the focus is always on the positive, the narrative's strongest when exploring the less charming sides of Glenmara; rich sources of missed potential include the local priest, nicknamed Father Dominic Burn-in-Hell Byrne, and Bernie's irritable best friend Aileen, the only lace society member to regard Kate with anything but syrupy goodwill. The result is a sweet novel with few surprises. Even Kate's pivotal, inspirational idea—embellishing the ladies' undergarments with lace—suffers from murky logic (as do reactions from characters like Father Byrne). A Great Summer Jaunt!

Have you ever felt like escaping from your life for awhile? Jumping in a car, and just driving somewhere far away? Away from problems or the negative things that weigh you down?

I know that I have. And, I think many women feel that way during times of stress or hardship. I think that's one reason I was hooked instantly by The Lacemakers of Glenmara, by Heather Barbieri, a book I'm reviewing for MotherTalk. This story follows Kate Robinson, a struggling fashion designer, as she travels to Ireland to forget a troubled past and reinvent herself.

Aside from the lovely landscape, author Barbieri stitches together an amazing and interesting tale about searching, sewing, and the strength in womens' friendships. I was instantly drawn to the various characters and lost myself in their world quite effortlessly, as if I'd stumbled upon the quaint Irish town myself.

The Lace Makers of Glenmara is a great summer escape without the cost of airfare. While it is not completely light and fun in its subject matter, it is a fabulous jaunt to Ireland and a glimpse into the lives of the people who live in Glenmara, as well as the main character's life coming back together after it has unraveled.

The story reminds me of why our friendships as women are very important and how true frienships can withstand whatever life throws at them. It is also a story of survival in the face of great loss and finding oneself again-of realizing you are stronger than you think you are.

Perfect Summer Read

I received the book, The Lace Makers of Glenmara, as part of a blog tour and saved it to enjoy while on summer vacation. I couldn't wait to read it because it sounded like a perfect summer read and I was not disappointed in the least.

The story is set in Ireland, the place where Kate flees to hoping to escape from her old life, reinventing herself in her ancestral homeland. As she travels across the land she ends up in the seaside village of Glenmara where she meets the women of a local lace-making society.

The lace makers are a diverse group from Bernie the lonely widow, Aileen with her low self-esteem and identity crisis, Moira an abused housewife, Oona a breast cancer survivor, and Colleen a fisherman's wife and leader of the group. The lace makers are finding that their craft is becoming obsolete as people are not purchasing the items they are designing anymore. Kate soon joins the group and finding inspiration through the women convinces them to use their lace making skills to create exquisit lingerie. They then use their talent to create lingerie with beautiful flowers, fish, fairies, and even skulls and bones.

Of course while they are busy creating their beautiful handiwork, friendships are evolving. The lacemakers are faced with many challenges including a priest who thinks their work is evil, broken relationships between spouses and children, sickness, and even death. However, with the strength they receive from each other, they each face their long-denied desires and fears and overcome them together. Of course the bad is also countered with the good as new love unfolds, relationships are mended, and new friendships grow.

Once I started the book I couldn't put it down. I was intrigued by each of the women and their story. They each added something unique to the group and the way Ms. Barbieri weaved the characters lives together was beautifully done. I often felt that I was sitting in the countryside peeking into the windows of their lives. The story flowed with ease and was filled with emotion as I related to what the women must be feeling individually and towards each other.

May every woman be blessed to be in a circle of friends like The Lace Makers of Glenmara.

Good Characters Just Not Enough Information

Where do I start with this review? Overall I found the book to be enjoyable. The tale woven about the Lace makers of Glenmara was quaint, easy to relate to and sincere but...it was a bit of struggle,initially for me, to get "into" the book. I found that I had to re -read the first chapter because it really wasn't clear to me what was going on. It took a few chapters to get in line with the characters and the situation. Once I did I found myself on a sweet yet simple journey with the main character, Kate.

The books is rich in Irish legend and history. You will find yourself within a mix of women that truly could easily be your own personal group of friends. Each with their own quirks and personalities yet definitely filled with love and loyalty for each other. There was so much more that I was yearning to learn about thesecharacters . While I feel that Heather did a great job...I still feel there was more that could have been added to the depth of the story line and characters. With each character I yeared for a little more detail, just a little bit more story line. As I was reading...I wasn't fulfilled with the information on the characters.

Would this become my "favorite" book? I'd have to say "no". But, Did I enjoy my time in Glenmara? Did I enjoy getting to know the lace makers? I'd definitely say "yes"!

About the Author
Roger D. Blair has been Huber Hurst Professor of Economics at the University of Florida since 1970. He teaches courses in antitrust economics, law and economics, and the economics of sports. He has published extensively, including several books, chapters in books, and numerous articles in economic journals and law reviews. Among the books that he has co-authored are Antitrust Economics, Law and Economics of Vertical Integration and Control, and Monopsony: Antitrust Economics. Professor Blair has served as an antitrust consultant to the US Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, the Attorneys General of California, Arizona, Missouri, Oregon, Washington, and Florida and numerous corporations.

Thomas F. Cotter is a Professor of Law, University of Florida Research Foundation Professor, and the Director of the Intellectual Property Program at the University of Florida Frederic G. Levin College of Law. He served as Senior Articles Editor of the Wisconsin Law Review and clerked for the Honorable Lawrence W. Pierce on the United States Court of Apprals for the Second Circuit. Before joining the faculty of the University of Florida in 1994, Professor Cotter practiced law at Cravath, Swaine and Moore and at Jenner and Block. He has published scholarly articles in the California Law Review, the Georgetown Law Journal, the Minnesota Law Review, the North Carolina Law Review, and the Willliam and Mary Law Review among others and was the recipient of the 1996 Ladas Memorial Award for writing excellence on the subject of trademarks. Professor Cotter's current research interests center on intellectual property, international intellectual property, and law and economics.

Narrow scope

I haven't yet completed my reading of this book. But since the publisher hasn't allowed Amazon users to read excerpts of it or search in the book, I thought it might be helpful to point out some of the book's limitations.

The book is intentionally limited to a discussion of infringement remedies, and the circumstances under which those remedies should be available. Chapters focus on liability standards for IPR infringement, who is an infringer, standing to sue, and calculation of money damages. The authors also propose a "general theory of damages rules." Throughout the book, the authors consider all major types of IP (patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets) -- though the discussion is limited almost entirely to US law. The economic analysis is neoclassical and very theoretical.

The authors make a significant omission, in my view -- they give scant attention to injunctive relief. There are many interesting issues currently swirling around in US IP jurisprudence concerning injunctions, especially for patents (e.g., who should have standing to seek an injunction for patent infringement), but such topics aren't discussed in any depth, if at all, in this book.

A deeper issue with the book is its non-empirical approach. Even on the subject of damage awards, you won't find any empirical data presented.

Empirical data also seem to me to be quite important for assessing whether IPR statutes truly provide incentives for innovation. Unfortunately, these supposed incentive effects are too often taken for granted. This book is no exception. Here's a quote from the introduction (pp. 2-3):

"[A]ll of the various bodies of IP law ideally strike a balance between incentives (to publish, to invest in product quality) on the one hand, and public access to the work product that results from these incentives, on the other. Just where the ideal balance lies remains a matter of disagreement. ... But our goal in this book is not to resolve these issues. Instead, we will assume that the policymaker has chosen a particular scope and duration for the IPR at issue, and that this choice reflects some reasoned consideration about the proper balance of social benefits and costs. ... As we will see, some ... enforcement rules may function better than others at preserving the incentive structure embedded in the substantive law; others may be less costly to apply, but may not function as effectively at preserving that structure."

My disappointment with this passage isn't that the authors avoid the issue of how to balance incentives and access. It's that they neither question nor demonstrate the existence of the incentive effects of IPR statutes, yet they propose to devote much of the book to looking at how to "preserve" these effects.

Because of the severe limitations of the authors' approach, I'm constrained to give the book at most three stars, regardless of what virtues I may discover in it as I complete my reading.
