Quite Simply a Mess
By Child of Herodotus
Why the author chose to begin his book on the conflicts between England and France in North America with three chapters on Christopher Columbus is a mystery. An even bigger mystery is why this rambling, incoherent fiasco of a book was ever published.
One example of the confused state of mind of the author will suffice. He retails the story of how Vaudreuil, the Governor of New France watched and was amused by his Indian allies burning a captive enemy alive. A number of years later, Vaudreuil's grandson became Governor(the last French Governor, as it turned out), and the author tells us the exact same story about the grandson, down to Vaudreuil's amusement at the dying man's grimaces as he was consumed by the flames. So, who is this story about-the first Vaudreuil or his grandson? We are left wondering.
The only positive aspect of this book is the author's focus on the depredations committed by the "Native Americans." The diaper wetting political correctness crowd would have us forget the inhuman, bestial savagery of these people they try to romanticize. At least Leckie shows us the Indians in their true light.

Wide-ranging, opinionated
By Joseph Bishop
As a work of history, I found Leckie's book to be rather opinionated, as his portraits of the various political and military personalities are nicely put together but he is rather condemnatory of this or that one, having his own assumptions as to how this or that battle should have been fought or how this or that politician should have behaved, rather than simply stating the facts and presenting the mores etc. of the times.
His book ranges as far back as pre-Columbus days and it is only rather close to the end parts of the book that the actual '7 Years War' finally emerges. Still, this kind of historical background was good to read and he is right to suggest that in the North American context, the actual 'French and Indian' war is more that of several conflicts ranging through a couple of centuries rather than merely the seven years of the final one.
Although... he could have continued the work well pass the War of 1812 to demonstrate that French resentments and their role in further conflicts on the frontiers between Americans, British, French, and Indians. That may have added a few more chapters but would have rounded off the whole series of related conflicts more completely.
I noticed that some chapter material is repeated in other chapters, and that there is some confusing back and forth chronologically speaking. I think that these are faults with the publisher and not the author's intent.
I strongly recommend a excellent book published subsequent to Leckie's, Anderson's CRUCIBLE OF WAR as the finest yet tome on these conflicts. I also strongly recommend Allan Eckert's series of books on this period of history, his 'Winning of America' series of six volumes, followed by two related works, for those wishing to immerse themselves further into this subject.

French and Indian War
By K. Day
I have read many books on the French and Indian war, by far I find that Francis Parkman is the "Godfather" of that time period but I stumbled across a copy of "A Few Acres of Snow" by Robert Leckie and couldn't put it down. He covers the settling of Canada and the colonies and gives you insight into what was happening in Europe at the same time. It's a must read for those who enjoy the history of the French and Indian war.
