Lots of fun in these mysteries

Turn of the last century England is the setting. The plots are serpentine. The local color and customs of the times are well reflected. I like that sort of thing. Though the prejudices of the time are reflected, the women are usually portrayed as spunky and smart. Fletcher wrote over 200 books. They are readable if more literate than today's fare. I enjoyed them.

There is so much mystery in each story. I like to read about the times when there were no cell phones, no computers, nothing but good honest mystery and murder. The motives are the same as today, but the tangle of facts and deductions are based on solid soil of a time gone by. Shows that we have always had mysteries.

If only he'd had good editors

J S Fletcher was a prolific writer (some 200 books) with a broad scope of interest. Half his books can be described as detective fiction and he wrote them over a period of only 20 years. Do the math. This collection contains 13 of the novels.

Fletcher writes technically well and his characters are interesting, credible, and varied. But considering the output (5 novels a year?) something has to give, and that's the plot. The novels do contain enough mystery, suspense, and surprise to keep you reading--usually. But after a while it gets to be an effort to overlook the problems.

First, there are the convenient coincidences that most writers shun with good reason. In these novels, one-chance-in-a-million events happen all the time--for no other reason than that Fletcher needs them to happen to keep the story moving. It's deus-ex-machina with a vengeance. The only conclusion I draw is that given his output, he's making the story up as he writes, with no real plan up front. The story-line feel unplanned and unedited--almost rambling at times. In some cases the tales get weirdly complicated with sudden arbitrary-seeming revelations that come out of nowhere. You get the feeling that Fletcher incorporated every idea that gave into his head while he was writing.

The result is mystery and suspense, but they often feel contrived and unsatisfying. The "classic" detective story needs to move very methodically from mystery to solution. The reader has to feel that he's being led through a series of clear but subtle clues inevitably toward and explanation of the enigma of the tale. That is the satisfaction one gets from reading such novels. It's missing in many of the novels in this collection. One of them, "Scarhaven Keep," for example, shows some of Fletcher's worst faults. It's a tale of ruined keeps, grim British provincials, murder, imposters, sinister Asians, marooned lovers, Norwegian pirates... a long story, and after the umpteenth coincidence and arbitrary plot twist, I gave up on it.

Still, if you're interested in detective fiction of the early 20th century, I would recommend reading Fletcher. I did enjoy several of the novels (despite the irritatingly sloppy plot-making): Middle Temple Murder, Orange-Yellow Diamond, Herapath Property, and others. I just wish Fletcher had written less and done it more carefully. Then he'd really be one of the greats.
